This is my mother-in-law who found the site. "For years after, Hervé de Kerret smiles again. The head of the international experiment Double Chooz sought in 2003 with its partners a nuclear power plant located near terrain where shelter a neutrino detector. These elementary particles are so capricious and elusive that they impose on their hunters a dual constraint: primo, physicists must burrow underground and cave to escape other parasitic cosmic rays; secondo, the sources of neutrinos are many even our body produces 400 million a day but it is better to target those that offer huge flows to increase the chances of getting some. What is the case of a nuclear power plant... But the two conditions were difficult to meet, no card listing a reactor near a hill. It is by chance, at a luncheon that the Mayor of a village near the Central EDF of Chooz in the Ardennes, spoke before his stepson the existence of caves adjacent to the plant.
Six years and EUR 38 million later, researchers made a hole in Chooz. EDF has opened them in grand central. The Department was renovated for their hosting the beautiful castle of the Aviettes, where racing Japanese, Brazilian, etc. The "net" to neutrino is almost in place in the cavity, 1 km from the Central and 150 metres below the surface. In this month of June, the technicians are ready to close the huge cylinder of 300 tons and 7 metres in diameter, to obstruct the radioactivity of the rock. Inside, 390 light sensors converge in the centre of the device as a large globular eyes. End of the year, the cylinder will be filled with several built-in liquid bath each in others as Russian dolls.

Because it takes cunning and the chance to observe a neutrino, knowing that it is not known the detect directly. Must it interacts with a nucleus of hydrogen, rare phenomenon: researchers hope to surprise a handful per day, on billions of billions which will cross the experience. This shock then generates a cascade of reactions in the bathroom of the detector which eventually produce a tiny glow registered by one of the photoreceptors. Researchers hope to collect enough neutrinos data to decode the oscillations. These particles have the particularity to have three forms, "flavours" nicely say physicists.
All the advantages
All original, they periodically aspect change during their existence. These metamorphoses or oscillations are still poorly understood. The interest to observe neutrino of a plant, it is that the fission reactions always produce the same flavour, so-called "electronic". The theory says that the highest probability of observing the first oscillation of this flavour to one of the other two is located at 1 km. Double Chooz therefore met all of its strengths to photograph live a few cases of oscillations.
This experience includes bring a stone more in the building of the physics of the neutrino, a very promising for refounding the theory of matter, path to evil by many discoveries. "The physics of the neutrinosest one of the very dynamic branches of the particle physics.". Neutrinos do not stick with the standard model. "We have a few tracks to achieve but we still need observation data", explains Thierry Lasserre, one of the project at the CEA.
