Guy Verhofstadt will ever be President of the European Commission His 2004 attempt had failed largely because some countries he blamed his fervent opposition to the war of Iraq. And today, the Portuguese José Manuel Duraő Barroso, the man of the Summit in the Azores with George Bush, Jose Maria Aznar and Tony Blair before the US offensive, prepares to press for a second term.

But there is a certainty in Guy Verhofstadt: his unwavering faith in Europe. Former Prime Minister of Belgium (1999-2008) is "European" almost by profession. After having defended in 'The United States of Europe' federalist vision, Guy Verhofstadt will, in his latest book, to think that Europe has the ability to "save the world". This crisis and the reduction of the weight of the United States of America in the world, "the time has come for the Europeans to return to their fate in hand", he wrote. Because the crisis is also a failure of the anglo-saxon model of total laissez-faire. It is true that America had widely imposed in the post-war period his views then that Europeans struggling to get up.

A reading of his book, if one were to retain the name of a guilty for the current crisis, it would be that Alan Greenspan, the former President of the Fed, which, for years, has ceased to inject liquidity into the economy, even create a huge bubble. It eventually explode with all today economic and social consequences. Its diagnosis is however not that of a simple political, it is in Economist that he dissects brilliantly and in pedagogical terms the causes and the crisis itself.

Ability to be together

The reader can ponder the reasons which led the Federal Reserve with Guy Verhofstadt a break one of the thermometers which for years had enabled to detect signs of overheating. Unlike the European Central Bank, the Fed stopped the publication of some data on the monetary mass (M3 aggregate) which could follow the way in which banks financing markets.

But when Europe is not yet won far from it. The Europeans must still demonstrate their ability to be together to America and the emerging powers. Former Prime Minister is working his criticisms of the '27 plans' European stimulus adopted without any consistency between them. Once again, there is not that friends among the leaders. He thus sees Nicolas Sarkozy auto plan a purely protectionist measure. The judgment of Angela Merkel in Germany with Opel is not more tender, nor with Silvio Berlusoni and the Italian manufacturer Indesit... "In a Word as in cent, it was not a question any coordinated action or common in Europe" as if the European single market was never established.

But can still doubt its solution to launch a huge "Europlan" funded by a huge European loan. This plan would boost the economic machine. Must have a driver while the "Franco-German engine" appears to be down. Verhofstadt does not hesitate: it's the turn of the Germany to take the initiative in Europe. But Europeans remain reluctant to take the step towards a Federation. Yet, one cannot forget that since its inception, more than fifty years ago, Europe was also built by acts of faith of a small number of political leaders, of Jean Monnet to Jacques Delors. It is with this in mind that Guy Verhofstadt wants to register with its vision of a Europe saving the world.
